Title

Aquaculture Engineer

Individuals Company

Centre d'Aqüicultura. IRTA. Generalitat de Catalunya. Sant Carles de la Ràpita (Tarragona) Spain

How did you get interested in marine biology

From the time I was a child I was interested in animals and farming. Then after High School I chose the University programme that matched my interest. I became an Agriculture Engineer. While in University, I learned about Aquaculture, and this was a new and attractive area for me.

Educational background

High School and a degree in Agricultural Engineering.

Did you go through any training while going to school that was beneficial

While studying for my degree in agriculture I spent one month working on a fishfarm. This engaged me so on completion of my studies I applied for a European COMMET Project. As a result, I worked for six months in a Sea bream and Sea bass hatchery in Greece.

Do you have any recommendations for individuals currently studying

A degree in agriculture is very useful; it has a wide scope and the potential for entering different sectors. Aquaculture can be a good area to specialize in.

Does the career field have potential to expand in the future? Is the career field a good option for both students and professionals considering a career switch?

The potential of this career field depends on the future of aquaculture itself. There are few good jobs at present except in major aquaculture producing countries. It is mostly vocational.

Tell us about a typical day in your job

My current responcibilities are:

  1. Monitoring facilities
  2. Organizing the work of culture staff
  3. Organizing the work of facilities maintenance staff
  4. Design and improvement of facilities
  5. Consulting Aquaculture enterprises
  6. Working in energy saving projects in our facilities
  7. Collaborating with researchers

Can you explain your best experience in the profession ?

My best experience came with the opportunity to design the facilities of the Centre I am working in now. I was delighted to see the Centre when it was completed and working properly.

What are you reading or watching to stay abreast on industry/market changes, improvements, challenges, etc.?

Scientific Magazines, Internet, Aquaculture Magazines and books, national and international meetings on Aquaculture.

Do you collaborate with other professionals in Europe or internationally?

I am in touch with people all over the world but mainly to share information with various fields related to engineering or aquaculture.
