Occupational profile for marine biologist

General profession title

MARINE BIOLOGIST

Common responsibilities of a Marine Biologist

Marine biologists are responsible for many different tasks in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. For example, he/she can work for a public administration body, estimating and monitoring the different stocks living in the ocean. Many marine biologists work as consultants, selling their expertise to other companies and organisations. An example, a marine biologists working with satellite based surveillance systems, collecting, analysing and selling the data. They can also work as scientists researching the ocean environment. Many marine biologists go out on ships to gather samples of animals, plankton, water and sediment. When they come home they analyse their samples and write reports about what they have found. The ocean is good at keeping secrets, so it is still difficult to estimate how large the different stocks are. Many marine biologists work on the farming of new species. Ohers work as teachers and lecturers in colleges and universities.

MARINE BIOLOGISTs in aquaculture may work in:
  • Development of new production methods for existing or new aquaculture organisms
  • Development of equipment for the aquaculture industry
  • Planning and organising the utilisation of the costal zone for aquacultural activities
  • Composition of food for the organisms in culture

Relation to Aquaculture

Marine biologists are especially well suited for the aquaculture industry. Their understanding of marine life is important when working with farming life in the sea. In areas where the industry is in its early stage, marine biologists are very important. They can work systematically with developing necessary tools and methods. In the daily operation of aquaculture plants, marine biologists use their competency to assess the well being of the farmed organisms, and to make the proper adjustments in the production process.

In particular, marine biologists may work in:

  • Management of fish and shellfish farms
  • Monitoring the health and well-being of the fish
  • Planning of production on the farm throughout the year
  • Coordination of projects in one or more plants
