Occupational profile for student

General profession title

Student

Common responsibilities of a student

No responsibility other than to find a job afterwards! Only joking! As a Masters student you are commonly responsible for acting as a research assistant for example I am working with a PhD student on a pearl oyster project. The profile of this job is similar to that of a hatchery manager's. It involves being in charge of 2-3 persons, production management, design and maintenance of the production site, production of safe spat, high quality micro-alga and spat production, and all related business and administrative matters. The hatchery produces spat and the work consists of evaluating the effect of enriched diet on growth rate development and survival rate. 3 to 4 batches are maintained in a protected area to allow for juvenile growth. Following attainment of a target size the animals can be either seeded for the production of pearl, or put back into the wild for repopulation of wild stock and/or selected as hatchery broodstock.

Relation to aquaculture

There are many different types of aquaculture related studies you can undertake. At undergraduate you may get a broad overview and understanding of how aquaculture production works. At Masters level you are carrying out a specific piece of research in the field of aquaculture and ultimately readying yourself for a career in aquaculture research and development if you so wish.
