Work conditions

It is very difficult to generalise the salary levels for a manager. This can depend on the activity within the sector rather than on the size of the company. Salaries can be very small, if the company has little margin, even if it produces 1000T. On the contrary, a 50T unit selling live, good quality product to fishermen, which is attaining a good price, can support a good management salary even if he/she has few employees.

Entry requirement

It is important to complete a minimum of studies in order to be successful as a manager. The manager will always have to deal with administration, so it is very important that those interested in management gain knowledge in accountancy, law and rules.

The minimum required for a manager is the final secondary/high school exam e.g. baccalaureate in aquaculture to the BTSA (France); post "A " level degree in sciences (biology, aquaculture, environmental).

Training

To be a manager requires a range of skills and knowledge. You must acquire scientific knowledge on your species and gain a scientific understanding of how everything works. You should pursue studies/training in business topics/affairs in order to be able to run a profitable business.
