Typical Work Activities

First semester study includes: management of culture systems, tropical aquaculture species, ecophysiology, marine ecology and environmental assessments.

Study of aquaculture provides extensive travel opportunities; I have already travelled to Ireland, Australia, Kiribati and Tahiti for both work and study within the aquaculture industry.
Permanent or temporary work available
Wide variety of options for students on completion of their studies. Different aquaculture occupations offer different levels of pay and availability of permanent and temporary positions.

Level of Degree necessary
Honours Degree for a Masters Programme

Relevant degree in the following subjects essential
Natural Sciences, Marine Sciences, Marine Biology, Agricultural Science

Typical years of study
Depending on the level and type of qualification you are seeking in aquaculture, studies may take anything from 1 up to 5 years excluding PhD. A Masters usually takes between 1 and 2 years to complete

Training

Some companies will offer their employees training and education grants as part of their pay package and/ or may suggest what course they should take. While taking a degree or an interest in aquaculture, you should make sure to get a work experience placement in the area/ discipline of aquaculture that is of interest to you.
