Summary

Genetic selection is one of the oldest methods used in breeding animals. It is a process of determining the relative share allotted to individuals of different genotypes in the propagation of a population or stock. The selection happens naturally in finfish and other water animals. It is a long-term process. The effects of many generation selections can be seen today with examples such as non-scaled common carp, high body shape in rainbow trout and ornamental form in ide.

Genetic methods are very useful in research on resistance to disease. Firstly, the different species and strains of viruses, bacteria or protozoa have to be detected and genetically recognized. The second way is to detect antibodies, which will operate against disease factors.
