A sheltered location for one of the
sites in the Nordlaks

The requirements for a good farming location are high. The location should be sheltered from heavy seas in order to protect the net pen, as well as the workers. It is important that the tides allow for continual exchange of clean, oxygenated water, but strong currents can reduce the real volume of the pen and cause the fish to crowd. The sea should be quite deep to prevent lethal gasses (hydrogensulphide) from accumulating as waste products on the bottom to contaminate the water. The site should be located where the water temperature varies within the limits of 0 degrees Celsius and 16 degrees Celsius. It is not good if the surroundings are inhabited by many predators (otter, seal and sea birds). Availability of freshwater is imortant at the site. The position relative to boat traffic and traditional fishing grounds has also to be taken into consideration. In general, one has to adjust to the site's carrying capacity.
Availability of good infrastructure (transportation, electricity, and telecommunications), qualified labour and services are of great importance to the economic life of the fish farm.
