The aquaculture industry is regulated via a series of Acts of Parliament concerning all aspects of farming, from keeping of broodstock to export of end products. Other legislation takes care of the environment, animal protection, working environment, fish diseases, quality control, etc.
The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries is the executing body of the laws directly related to the fisheries sector alone. They have made provisions for different acts regulating the industry. One of these provisions states that it is not permitted to slaughter fish at a fish farm. Another important provision is that all plants dealing with the slaughter and packaging of fish have to implement a control system based on the HACCP principle. This means that all fish processing plants must make a detailed documentation of every part of the production process. There are a dedicated set of provisions dealing with import and export of fish based nutrients to the EU.
