Aquaculture is a highly regulated industry in Greece. In order for a farmer to create and run a fish farm, the Government stipulates that he/she strictly obeys a number of set prerequisites - protection of the environment, health and safety of the produced fish, fish welfare, health and safety of the personnel, strict regulation of the capacity of the farm, avoidance of introduction of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), and also the species farmed must be native to the area, in order to avoid the release of non native species in the wild.
To safeguard the protection of the consumers, fish farms are requested to adopt quality control systems such as HACCP for their processing units. Recently, the Greek fish farmers have adopted a strict Quality Scheme for their products. The Federation of Greek Maricultures (FGM) strongly supports the adoption of the Code of Conduct prepared by the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP).
