Different species of seahorses

A cultured seahorse ensures a far superior animal in terms of quality, feeding and survivability, thereby altering consumer trends over time to demand purely for cultured animals, reducing the demand on wild caught animals.
Seahorse Ireland will develop a low technology method of culturing seahorses, which would have applications in areas where seahorses are traditionally fished. Subsistence fishers may earn money from the culture and ranching of seahorses, as opposed to exerting continuous pressures on a fishery already in trouble.
Seahorse Ireland is carrying out research, in conjunction with The National University of Ireland Galway and The Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, into the biology, ecology, feeding, health and husbandry of seahorses. The information gathered in this research will have a positive effect on developing protocols for the culture of seahorses. The current paucity of information on seahorses is one of the major stumbling blocks in the conservation of the animal.
