Lots of enterprises operating in the aquaculture sector are located in the large lagoon areas situated in the North East of Italy. Most of the fish farms operating in the area carry out “Vallicoltura”. “Vallicoltura” is a breeding technique with a long tradition in Italy and it is carried out where salt water mixes with fresh water (inside lagoons, channels or valleys, located in correspondence to mouths of the rivers). "Vallicoltura” involves the raising of different species of fish (particularly sea bass, sea bream, mullets, eels, etc), molluscs (clams and mussels) and shellfish.
The lagoon channels seem to be particularly appropriate for the breeding of the clam Tapes philippinarum.
It is due to the suitable environmental conditions (water, air and substrate) that this kind of mollusc is found in the valleys. ALMAR specialises in the production of such clam species. Tapes philippinarum is a recent introduction to Italy (in 1983).
