Flatfish farming is a relatively new venture in Ireland with the first farm only opening in 1991. In Europe, it has only been established as an industry since the mid 1980s. The Connemara site was chosen for its supporting infrastructure, as well as the availability of an aquaculture knowledgeable labour force.
