The French Aquaculture Federation represents national aquaculture interests for the profession, which is also a member of the recently-formed inter-professional organisation, the Inter-professional Committee for Aquaculture Products. Shellfish production is dominated by oyster and mussel aquaculture, which is represented by the National Committee for Shellfish Culture (Comité National de la Conchyliculture) - follow link for more information.
Aquaculture in France represents on of the most important national sectors in Europe; it is particularly diverse with important shellfish (oysters, mussels…), freshwater fish (trouts, carps…) and marine fish (seabass, seabream, turbot…).
In France the average production of shellfish is around 205 000 tonnes (130 000 t of pacific cupped oysters, 1 500 t of flat oysters, 65 000 t of mussels, 2 000 t of cockles Cerastoderma edulis and 2000 t of carpet shells Ruditapes)
Rainbow trout is the most important freshwater fish producer while carp is produced in the traditional manner, using extensive farming techniques.
